Do Something Crazy
“There was a time- a foolish, silly, time perhaps, but a time nevertheless- when every college campus in the country had a white boy who knew they’d make it famous as a rapper. A West Chester University student named Asher Roth had birthed hundreds of imitators. They found varying degrees of success. Sammy Adams, Hoodie Allen, Mike Stud, Lil Dicky, G-Eazy etc. If you’re saying to yourself “those aren’t real people” just know they were once the stars of their own universe. For every Mac Miller or Mike Posner however, there were fish that never made it out of the pond. Peter Dolt never made it out of the pond.”
I have a morbid fascination with the microgenre of music mentioned above. It hit at the perfect time- when I was 18 and a freshman in college. This was 2008 and the economy had collapsed but I was blissfully ignorant of all real world events. Asher Roth released “I Love College” and I thought it was legitimately good lol. Listening to music from that era now, I’m aware of its complete rejection of reality. But that’s what college was for me and so many others at the time, a fantasy-land. Without further adieu the tale of Peter Dolt…
